What is Shiatsu Massage Therapy?

Shiatsu is a Japanese term, which means finger pressure. Shi means finger and atsu means pressure....so finger pressure over the acupuncture points of ancient Oriental medicine. Subsequently, the Shiatsu practitioner uses finger, thumbs and palm of hand to apply pressure to specific points on the surface of the clients' body

Shiatsu is a bodywork therapy that has spawned a number of derivative therapies in healing. The body's natural healing abilities are aided through the appropriate usage of specifically designed Shiatsu discipline pressure techniques to specific areas of the body.

Shiatsu massage can significantly improve health by relieving stress, by calming and appropriately stimulating the nervous system as well as the immune system.  The therapy can reduce tension, insomnia, digestive upsets, back pain, headaches and reproductive essentials and is valuable in promoting overall health.

In a traditional Shiatsu treatment, bare hands are utilized, clothing is normal, as pressure points are activated and treated on a mat on the floor, as opposed to treatments that require oils or powders. Long-term treatment has led to postural as well as behavioral correction of imbalance.

In Japan, Shiatsu therapy is fully integrated into the healthcare system. On a worldwide basis, Shiatsu therapy has become exceedingly popular. The founder of Shiatsu therapy is Tokujiro Namikoshi Sensei. He was born November 3rd, 1905 in Kagawa prefecture on Shikoku Island, Japan. His experiences as a child led to the development of this mainstream Japanese Massage technique. His life story is a wonderful chronicle of devotion to preventing and curing illness.
